Book Review

I would give my book, Heroine of the Titanic: The Real Unsinkable Molly Brown, by Elaine Landau, Copyrighted in 2001, and published by Clarion books Publishing company four out of five stars. Compared to most biographies that I have read this is by far the best one! It kept me entertained and flowed very well. The author did a very good job describing each situation she faced as if she was there with Molly. Some parts of the book I wished had more details but over all it was a very good book. It was very informative and easy to follow but I wish it talked more about her time on the Titanic.

I would read another book from this author because I really enjoyed her work on this novel. The author, Elaine Landau, made me want to keep reading about Molly Brown, and for me most biographies don't do that. I would also recommend this book to my friends and my teachers if they are looking for an informative, interesting biography. It is also easy to write about so if you need a project book I would definitely recommend this book.

Events Which Shaped My Life

Everyone has reasons why they became the person that they are today. Some reasons are positive, some are disappointing. What I'm trying to say is that everything that you do every day shapes your life. I would be happy to share some of the major events that shaped my life. One of them would have to be, getting married to J.J. Brown. Marrying him changed my life because without his money I wouldn't have been able to fund raise, travel, donate, and have a family. These things are some of the most important things in my life and with out him these things couldn't be possible.

Another thing that shaped my life would be how I grew up with a poor family and a lot of people. Growing up like this I didn't always get things for me. Like our food was limited so I got a small amount and I didn't get a room to myself or any of the things that I got as I aged. This made me want to help other people that lived like that. I didn't want anyone to ever feel like food and water had to be used in moderation. I wanted people to feel like if they were hungry that they could just go and eat.

The last major thing that changed my life would be the sinking of the Titanic. During this time I was scared and so was everyone else. The difference was that I didn't want people to know that I was scared, and other people just showed it. I wanted to be know as the one that could handle anything, and after the Titanic I was. People started calling me, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. As if that wasn't courteous enough then the people started to call me a heroine. I was flattered, and I wanted to live up to the names. So from then on I always tried to be brave!

Interesting Things About Me!

One of the many interesting things about me is that I didn't attend either of my kids weddings because I was traveling. I am a very big traveler and I didn't get the dates of the weddings until everything was paid for. By then I couldn't cancel my trips, but I wished them the best of luck. I am not very proud of this but there is nothing that I can do about it now. Some people would say that I didn't like my daughters husband so I didn't attend her wedding because of that reason. That is not true, I was actually very fond of him.

I was also one of the first women to run for the U.S. congress. This was a giant leap for women and I am very proud to have been apart of that leap. Although I didn't make it, I didn't give up. I later joined a group of feminists who petitioned President Calvin Coolidge to support the Equal Rights Amendment. I feel that my candidacy made an important statement for women, and I was very brave to run! I am very proud of myself for doing that!

Something else that was very interesting about me was that my husband J.J. Brown and I separated, but we didn't get a divorce because we were both Catholic, and getting a divorce was not supported in the Catholic religion. Also, our church did not allow it. Although we didn't go through with the divorce, we lived in separate houses and only saw each other at family gatherings. Even when we saw each other there, we wouldn't speak to each other much!

Traits That Decribe Me!

Here are some of the traits that I have been known for.

  • Considerate - I have been called considerate because I always put people before myself. Just like when I donated my own money and my own time to fund raise to help other people, such as widowed women, churches, and hospitals. Also, I always wanted to give the love and care that my dad gave me when I was a child. I wanted to give him a house, one where he could relax and not have to worry about spending a dime on it.

  • Brave - Some people call me brave because when I was in the lifeboat that saved me from sinking on the Titanic,I stood up to the crew member in the lifeboat when no one else would. After I stood up to him we went back to go save and gather more people that weren't as fortunate. Also, people thought I was brave because I would travel the world by myself.

  • Leadership - I was known for being a leader for many reasons. Some of them include, being the Chairperson of the Denver Women's Club Art and Literature Committee, the Carnival of Nations, Women's Relief Committee and I organize help for the Ludlow miners and their families after the Ludlow Massacre.

  • Fashionable - I was known for being fashionable because I always paid careful attention to my wardrobe. I had gowns and traveling clothes, shoes and hats, for every occasion. Many of my outfits came from Paris designers and were made from the best and most expensive fabrics. I also would work with the dressmakers to find the most flattering styles. It was known that I would not be seen in public in the same outfit twice. That's why I became known as a fashionable, high society women.

  • Intelligent - People called me intelligent because I was always trying to learn new information about people and places. That is one of the reasons that I would travel the world. One of the things people didn't know about me is that I didn't attend college. I hired a tutor to help me study French and other foreign languages. I also studied drama, music and literature. After I studied and learned on my own I became known as an intelligent woman.
